UTV and Pre-Runner Checklist Before Desert Season
The worst place to find a blown shock or a worn belt is two hours from home in the sand. Go through this list a few weeks before your first trip so there's time for parts.
Shocks
- Oil on the shaft or body means a seal is going
- Fade on long whoop sections or bottoming you didn't have before
- Rebuild interval: high-hour or hard-run shocks need a rebuild every season
- Coming back from a lift or tire change? Re-check ride height and preload
Drivetrain
- Drive belt: check for glazing, cracks and missing cogs, and carry a spare
- Clutches: check engagement and sheave wear
- CV boots: a torn boot lets sand in and kills the joint
- Wheel bearings and tie rod ends: grab the tire and check for play
Fluids and the rest
- Engine oil, coolant, front and rear diff and transmission fluids
- Brake pads and fluid
- Lights, battery and wiring for accessories
- Whip flag, fire extinguisher, tow strap and a basic tool kit
Book early
Shops fill up right before the season starts. Book shock rebuilds a few weeks ahead so you're not waiting on parts the week of your trip.
