Harley 3-Hole Service: What It Is and When You Need It
Big Twin Harleys keep the engine, primary drive and transmission in separate compartments, each with its own fluid. A 3-hole service changes all three.
The three holes
- Engine oil and filter: the engine's own oil supply
- Primary chaincase: lubricates the primary chain and clutch
- Transmission: gear oil for the gearbox
How often
Engine oil gets changed most often. Primary and transmission fluid can go longer. Intervals differ by year and engine (Evo, Twin Cam, Milwaukee-Eight), so check your owner's manual. Many riders do all three at once so nothing gets missed, especially on a bike that's new to them.
What we check while it's in
- Drain plugs and the magnetic plug for metal
- Clutch adjustment and cable
- Belt or chain wear and tension
- Brake pads, fluid and tires
- Fork seals for weeping oil
What the drain plug tells you
A little fine paste on the magnetic plug is normal. Chunks or slivers of metal in the transmission oil mean something inside is wearing, and that's worth looking into before it gets worse.
