How to Winterize a Jet Ski in Southern California

Even with mild winters, a jet ski that sits for months with old fuel and salt or lake water inside comes back with problems. A proper off-season service prevents most of them.

The steps

  • Flush the cooling system with fresh water, then blow out or drain the water
  • Fill the tank and add fuel stabilizer, then run it briefly so treated fuel reaches the injectors
  • Change the engine oil and filter on four-strokes so old oil doesn't sit over winter
  • Fog the engine if your manufacturer recommends it
  • Check the impeller and wear ring for nicks and gaps
  • Take the battery out or put it on a maintainer
  • Clean, dry and cover it, with the seat cracked open for airflow

When to do it

Right after your last ride of the season, usually October or November. Book it then so it's done before the spring rush, when everyone wants theirs back at once.

Spring start-up

Before the first ride: charge or reinstall the battery, check for leaks and chewed wires, and run it on the hose for a few minutes before you launch.
